Welcoming Winter

Core Holiday
Winter Solstice: December 21st

Yule marks the turning of Midwinter and the longest night of the year. Though the night is at its deepest at this point, this is the moment where the days begin to lengthen again, and the promise of warmth and growth slowly returns. It will be a few weeks before this is noticeable, however, as the increase is gradual. Most of nature likewise still rests in quiet dormancy at thist time. Still, the sun’s subtle return is a visible reminder that life continues.

In Jewish terms, the Sun’s return at this time is a celebration of life and renewal, and a reminder of HaShem’s constancy; a reflection of the flow of Divine vitality into the world, reassuring us that creation continues, and divine providence never ceases. The cycle of nature thus becomes an expression of HaShem's ongoing care for all living things.

This is a time to turn inward. The long nights invite contemplation, Torah study, and reflection on the year past, as well as setting intentions for the year ahead. The increasing light becomes a metaphor for spiritual illumination, wisdom, divine inspiration, and blessing. For just as the light increases in the sky, so too can we cultivate inner illumination, honoring the steadfast presence of HaShem.

Meditation

Find a quiet spot where you can see the first light of dawn. Sit comfortably with an unlit candle before you; you may use a cushion or chair if needed for comfort. Close your eyes and ground yourself in your body. Take slow, deep breaths. Feel the weight of your body settle into the surface you sit on. Notice the points of tension, and allow them to soften with each exhale. Silently offer gratitude for the elements of the season; place your hands over your heart and say "Blessed are you, Adonai, who sustains life through every season".

Bring your attention to the darkness around you. Slowly imagine the sun beginning its return, light spreading across the horizon. Sense its warmth in your mind and spirit. As the light grows on the horizon, set an intention for your own spiritual renewal this season. Visualize your intention as a small flame within, growing brighter with the sun.

Take three slow breaths, feeling your body grounded and your spirit connected to both earth and sky. Open your eyes and light your candle to mirror the growing dawn. Allow it to burn (if safe) for the rest of the day- exstinguishing it at nightfall (do not worry if it goes out or you must exstinguish it before then).
