Ostara

Core Holiday
Spring Equinox: March 21st

Ostara marks the moment in the turning of the year when day and night stand in perfect balance; the renewal that has been long anticipated since Midwinter finally becomes fully visible in (in the words of Rabbi Jill Hammer) the final triumph of life ... This is the turning point where winter has truly ended, and life begins to rise again. What was promised at Yule and awakened at Imbolc now emerges fully into the open world: Green returns to the land, soil softens and opens, and growth moves from the hidden to the revealed; creation steps forward, no longer in restraint, but into active becoming and oriented toward abundance.

In Jewish terms, Ostara celebrates the Shekhinah- the indwelling presence of the Divine in the world- in her renewing aspect. It is the season of revelation: The outward manifestation of divine vitality within creation. This is not a moment of sudden transformation, however, but of rightful emergence- steady and embodied- when life expands into creation because it has been properly prepared. The equal measure of light and dark likewise reminds us that holiness is sustained through balance rather than excess.

As Rabbi Jill Hammer writes, "In spring, the young plants bursting forth from the ground need protection and room to grow, and we ask this blessing for ourselves as well". And as the growth of the season accelerates, we are asked to meet the gift of creation with discernment and faithfulness, and called into our divine responsibility to tend it wisely. In this way, Ostara also marks the sacred readiness of the world (and of ourselves) to receive life fully, and to tend it in partnership with HaShem as creation continues to unfold. Ostara thus invites outward motion guided by restraint and care.
