Guiding Principles of Spiritual Practice

No matter why we might engage in spiritual practices, we should still engage in good spiritual practices. Thus, ideally, our spiritual practices should align with the following guiding principles for how to consider and approach one’s spirituality and practice:

  • It Should cleanse and purify us, eliminating any spiritual impurities and pollution (whether our own or those around us).

  • It Should sharpen our senses so that we can see past the mundane world around us, thus enabling us to commune with the Divine (or other Spirits and realities) as desired.

  • It Should regularly rejuvenate us- reminding us of our spiritual goals and reawakening and renewing us on our path to them.

  • It Should keep us in predominantly good spirits; it should give us encouragement when we are discouraged, and solace when we are worried.

  • It Should be a respite from the trials of mundane life; we should be able to steal away, even if for a moment, to participate in our spirituality without being consumed by worldly matters.

  • It Should never get old or stale, no matter how long it’s been since we started it, and no matter how long it might have been since we last engaged with it.

  • It Should satisfy us without overwhelming us- even if we do a lot. For even large practices should not become too much to understand or handle.

  • It Should satisfy us without underwhelming us- even if we do little. For even small practices should leave a lasting spiritual impact.

  • It Should satisfy us without becoming a distraction or detriment, or otherwise getting in the way of our Mundane lives; spirituality should complement life and naturally intertwine with it- not interfere with it.

  • It Should never become a harm to us in our everyday practice; we should not be negatively impacted by our practices, especially if we engage in them frequently.
