The Five R's of Spiritwork

1. Respect

Spirits are powerful, regardless of whether one is dealing with Divinities or not, and you should have respect for that power. It’s also important to respect them as autonomous beings; interactions need not be complex, but should be respectful and reverential, and according to their expected etiquette. Be polite and well mannered, worship according to their custom when applicable, and use appropriate language.

2. Research

It is important to know who and what you’re dealing with; etiquette differs from culture to culture, time period, and even spirit group, and knowing what or who you’re dealing with tells you how to respect them appropriately- or, at least, drastically reduces the chance of significantly offending them.

3. Reciprocity

Spirit relationships are a two way street built on mutual beneficiality in some regards. And in order to get those benefits you have to give as well as you take. This is why things such as offerings and following the appropriate protocol in worship are important.

4. Relationship

Your relationship with Spirits is just that: A relationship. It takes both time and effort to build one, and they operate on mutual respect and trust. That means keeping your word and any oaths you make, performing any duties you’ve agreed to, and so on.

5. Receptivity

To be receptive is to be open to and ready to receive anything that comes your way. This is an essential quality for anyone wishing to connect with Spirits on a deeper level, and take them on as important allies; connecting with them often means allowing them a constant place in your life and submitting yourself to their lessons and wisdom, and whatever else they choose to bring with them. You may very well experience things you never asked for, but receptivity demands that you be open to their meanings anyways an allow them to unfold regardless.
