Invocation «vs» Evocation

Calling on an entity for a ritual or magical working usually comes in one of two ways: you invoke them, or you evoke them. The words tend to get used interchangeably, but they do have different meanings and very different results. Both practices manifest the deity in our world, give them a place on earth, and give us an opportunity to interact with them in a tangible and intimate, physical way.

To invoke an entity is to call on them, and invite them directly into your body, allowing them to possess you. To evoke an entity is to call on them to be present, but not to enter your body. Both practices are common in many Pagan and Witchcraft traditions, and it is helpful to understand the mechanics of each action.

Entities that may be called include deities, elemental beings, nature spirits, and even the spirits of beloved dead or ancestors.
