Divination Is Vital to Practice

Developing your Divination skills is vital for developing an active and informed magical practice. For instance: Do you want to do a spell to improve your financial situation? You want to start working with X Spirit? Has the ward you established been acting up? Have your Ancestors been trying to tell you something for months now? Do you want to know the best way to approach the binding of a coworker? All of these and more can be answered through a simple divination session.

This is why developing skills with at least one method of Divination- Tarot, Runes, etc- is vital for almost any magical practice. It is part of honing your skills and in the long run, and one that will pay off majorly; ‘properly prepared’ includes divination so you have a better insight into a situation or person,or whatever magical, spiritual, or religious predicament crops up. And this will in turn result in you having a better handle on it, and increasing positive outcomes for yourself. Not only that, but also to better learn from mistakes you make.

Frankly it doesn’t take much to light a candle and work a spell. But honing your skills in the divination department will- and post-ritual divination can tell you a lot about the magic you worked. This will add to your spellcasting and overall craft as a witch. Sometimes it can even improve other psychic abilities as a result of the practice as well; I’ve known avid card readers who’ve found the ‘knowing‘ of things just started to come to them over time, or that they started to hear the Spirit Whisper through their cards after long.

Personally I see this as someone’s second sight coming into play. And it is different for everyone. But it likely will happen, as honing one’s divination seems to sharpen it over time. That said, keeping up a meditation routine also doesn’t hurt. But that is a different topic.

Regardless of which system you choose to learn, one ability isn’t better than another- and all Divination is a skill that requires time to learn, even if you take to a particular system as a fish to water. Be patient with yourself.

You don’t expect a seed to sprout and turn into a full plant in a day, so why add the weight of that expectation on your shoulders? There will be days you are so sharp and accurate it will feel like a victory, as will there be days when you’ll get frustrated, don’t get the meaning and feel disconnected. And other days will go ‘okay’. Though in time the okay days will become better and turn to good. And you learn to read and understand why it doesn’t work at certain times for you. And then you grow some more in your craft.

If anything, it is all about how you grow and utilize the skills you have in the end. And so make sure you are utilizing them; once a week, upon waking, go before your shrine and pray devotion to your deities. Ask for their guidance and perform a divination. Do post-ritual divination on your workings. Divine about your week, or your Spirits. Do readings for others; find ways to practice and grow in your skills always, and you will always be growing.

Just be cautious: Divination can easily become a crutch; the individual who won’t leave the house without consulting a psychic is cliché, but too often becomes true. It’s important to remember, however, that divination isn’t a necessity for daily living. It is a tool that we’re supposed to pick up and use when needed, and then set back down.
